I've come to find things I like (Overland culture, trail maintenance) and some things I really don't understand of off-road culture. One of these things is the prevalence, or need to dress up "tactically." Before I get into it, I will preface with that I am a "gun person." Interpret that how you like. I acknowledge that many servicemen and women drive off-road vehicles and from their time in the service, are used to a certain "style," if you will. (Thank you for your service!) That being said, I feel there is no need for anyone to wear an ACU or chest rig when out wheeling with friends and family or camping out in the backcountry for a month. Yes, your RTT and all your LEDs make you look OAF. Now please, stop. There's no enemy to fight, no operation to carry out. Just enjoy the silence, freedom, and space.
What does Oppo think?

Tactical Off Roaders? That is a thing? WOW Walts everywhere apparently.

I think I need to pay better attention, I had to look twice at what you were even demonstrating in the picture. I seriously didn't see the Assault Rifle at first.
And I think that depends where you're camping and how far off the trail you are.
If you're in Alaska way off the beaten path, you better have a gun with you, same for say...Montana. Plenty of reasons to carry.
If you're on a local trail and can still hear the highway, you might need to just tone it down a bit...

I think I need a SCAR in my life. I would complement my collection nicely.

I'm all for carrying. One of the fellas in my club carries a pistol on his hip everywhere he goes. What I'm trying to say is I don't understand the attraction with raiding the surplus store to take your family camping.
![]() 10/08/2014 at 16:07 |

I don't know if it's officially a "thing," but I think folks need to tone it down.

Almost bought a SCAR-H but decided for 7.62 NATO I wanted an M1A National Match instead. Still haven't pulled the trigger though.

Hahaha yeah I hear you. My dad and sister carry everywhere, I just don't have the funds to have them yet. Though she's a Sheriff's Deputy and they live down south where almost everyone carries.
I mean assault rifle (like the above Jeep) is a bit over the top for a local trail.
But yeah, you don't need to store all your stuff in surplus ammo cans for a weekend camping trip with the kids.

I recently had a veteran complain to me that the president should only be someone from the military, not a civilian, because then they would know what it's like to be in the position of the people they're commanding.
I mentioned that the reasons we have a civilian president are:
1. The president is in charge of a whole lot of things besides the military, and governing those things shouldn't necessarily be done with a military mindset.
2. The president being a civilian is to provide a check against an all-military chain of command.
He responded by repeating himself, and not talking about either of the things I had just said.
Which is to say, a lot of military types, tend to continue thinking from that perspective long after they leave the service. Who knows why? Seems like this is a manifestation of the same mindset.

For a vet to do it maybe for that familiarity, or a comfort thing.
For everyone else, wannabeism and dude-broness. Like those cross fit obsessives, yes it's cool just not all the time.

I give leeway to veterans and those currently in service. What I'm really trying to center in on are the folks who think it's fun to play "dress up like an army man." Just ridiculous.

You raise an interesting related topic by implication: in what measure are "tacticool" gun owners and overaccessorizing offroaders indulging in the exact same kind of goofiness?
On your actual topic, there's a lot to be said for carrying in the woods (cougar, bear, etc.) but long guns are probably overkill.

If you feel that you need to equip yourself for a war zone when you're doing any sort of normal activity, you are clearly mentally unstable and need help. The AR mount is cool, though.

I have a friend who's done quite a few "Overland" trips, and frequently "get's lost" in the Arizona & New Mexico deserts. If there is an area where one might need something like that SCAR/AR-15/etc., that's the place. However, back trails of Arkansas, not so much. Alaska, I can see that (large caliber animal vs. small caliber bullet theory).
![]() 10/08/2014 at 16:16 |

Agreed. I always lol when I see someone just randomly wearing something in UCP/ACU.

There's so much in common that I think the two hobbies intersect. Opening my first Overland Journal I wanted to max out my credit card buying everything I saw. (The desire is still very real, haha) I think what separates the two is moderation and creativity. Buying/creating what you can and making it work is off-road culture. Literally "rigging out" your truck with crap you'll never need is the other. Talking bout DB lifts, body lifts, net-mesh fastback tops for Jeeps, 37s with no cutting, etc.

Your facts are useless in such a discussion, sadly. The following is from the D epartment of Defense itself:
The framers of the U.S. Constitution worked to ensure the military would be under civilian control. They did not want to emulate the European experience. The colonies had just fought a war for freedom from Britain. The king controlled the British military, and the framers had no interest in duplicating that system.
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
When they wrote the Constitution they separated the responsibilities for the military, placing the responsibilities firmly in civilian hands.
The link goes on to give a very interesting history of civilian control of the military. Your veteran friend should read it.
There have certainly been presidents who were retired military, Eisenhower being the first to come to mind. But even the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs, the president's principal military adviser, has no operational command . The Founding Fathers knew exactly what they were doing.

I'm not against carrying a rifle. More power to your friend. But if he's out in the desert dressed to the nines in combat-ready gear, I don't get it.

Some people buy flash suppressors because they like to go to an open range in the evening. Some people buy them because they look cool. Some people put lift springs on to crawl in their favorite mudhole, some to drive to the bar. It's hard to say any specific mod on gun or trail rig is always unnecessary, but going Full Retard is one of those things you definitely know when you see it.

Its sad that I have to preface this but because internet... I'm actually very pro open carry and support RESONSIBLE gun ownership.
That being said, I find it dismaying how so many of the "pro-gun" activists are almost actively damaging their cause with the exact behavior depicted on the left. I actually support the rights of any business that forbids that behavior. It isn't about the guns, its about you being a dick and making a spectacle of how much of a dick you are. Using your firearms as a form of public masturbation is NOT responsible gun ownership. If people would get that through their damn heads then maybe the country could take a step in the right direction on this issue.

I actually haven't seen this yet offroading in Michigan, despite being an open-carry state and knowing plenty of people who carry. I think I'd roll my eyes so hard they'd fall out if someone brought a rifle to go mudding, but on a deep woods trail running/hunting trip it makes sense. I totally agree that the "playing soldier" thing is silly, too.

Guns don't make me nervous, it's the people who bug out every Saturday morning that do.
From where I'm from in Texas, you see it often, which definitely doesn't help the "Hnnggg guns, I can't wait till I can legally shoot a man" stereotype.
Up here in Colorado, many Jeepers like to make statements. I saw a bright yellow one of 37s with this plastered all over it. (shitty photochop for emphasis)

Seriously. If you're going to cross an angry bear, you probably want something a little more hefty than a .223.
![]() 10/08/2014 at 16:52 |

The irony with the tacticool gun fad is that in a REAL LIFE COMBAT SCENARIO like mallninjas 2ELITE4U OPER8RS think they'll be in when SHTF because YOU DIDN'T VOTE RON PAUL, all the lights and lasers and useless bullshit and miles of "Rail Estate" (no, just... fuck you) would drag the person down with weight and their complexity makes them more likely to break.
That was one sentence.
I pretty much draw the line (for myself) at optics and a foregrip. Maybe a single light or crimson trace grip for a home defense gun (since you might need to use it in the dark). IDGAF what other people waste their money on.
![]() 10/08/2014 at 16:52 |

Maybe I'm crazy, but I'd kinda rather have an HK91/SAR-8 variant than join the AR15 herds - if I have to go .223, then there are some other options as well (SL-8, etc.). H&K Ueber Alles.

I work Air Force Comm. By no means have I been on any "missions" or anything like that. Hell, in almost 5 years, I haven't deployed once. But I absolutely hate when people try to turn their Wrangler's into Humvee's. It just looks stupid. If you want to lift your vehicle, do it. Make it a trail or off-roader, not covered in light bars and painted matte green just because it looks "militarized".
Also, I hate people wearing ABU's/ACU's outside of work for off-roading. It doesn't make you look cool. You have to clean those and wear them for work anyways, why ruin them and have to go buy more? We recently had a squadron paintball event and so many people wore their ABU's. The majority of the reasoning I heard was so they could blend in. I looked at them and asked (seriously) "What the hell are you going to blend in with in the woods with ABU's?" I never got an answer either.

I'm still kicking myself for not buying an AMD-65 when they were $465.
Or an RPK (AEB-110, technically) when they were $499.
I want a FAL too. And a VZ-61.
And one of those SMG gunworks FG42 replicas.
Really, just... all the guns.
![]() 10/08/2014 at 17:12 |

I only have access to my dad's collection thus far. I want to kick things off with a Marlin 1894C, because I'm pretty sure it's the kind of thing that could outlast a couple generations. My short list is Marlin, Uberti SAA replica, RIA or STI .45, and then play it by ear from there.

I like guns dont own many or shoot often but I always assumed people who dress in army gear all the time and into tactical gear and own ten ar15s are very angry low self esteem people. for them it seems a costume rather than any practical purpose behind thier lifestyle. if I were rich I would mock them by buidling a truck out of AR15s.
![]() 10/08/2014 at 17:25 |

Rule: The cool high-country ranger models himself after George Hayduke from The Monkey Wrench Gang and not Segeant Buzzcut from Toy Soldiers or whatever. If you have a rifle or pistol, do you mind maybe stowing that? Plenty of space in your truck I'm sure.
That shit would piss me off. We don't have paramilitaries in the US. But we do have militias, and that just screams "I want to be in a militia."
Save the guns for camping, or, you know,
the range.

Yeah, wow, when I hear that garbage it just cracks me up. It honestly shows the difference between a career officer and some no-account hurr-dee-durr one-time enlistee with his chest puffed out. Every officer I've known has zero to say about politicians. And veterans like my dad came from an era where Corporal Nobody should realize that he isn't in any position to influence the government.
Anyone who doesn't see the connection between having all military men in the presidency and the government becoming a junta, or how easily that would turn into fascism, is showing their uneducated card to everyone assembled.

Yea, if you're driving deep into grizzly bear territory in Alaska (cause in Canada such weapons are restricted, you'd probably put an old Lee Enfield in there) then the rifle holster might be appropriate. Otherwise, no.

Figured I'd share two perspectives not yet mentioned:
1.) The tacticool guys may be man-children playing army in a fantasy land, but it's their $ being spent on gear that helps keep lights on/pay for development. I used to make the same argument about rice boys in the 90's-00's. Paying $400 for a fart cannon helps, say, Dynomax build stuff that I'd use. That big bro truck with the Nitto off road tires that wear out in 3000 miles? Throwing cash to a company that makes my drag radials.
Doesn't change the fact that they are annoying, but at least there's a silver lining. Otherwise it can make you crazy. I shoot very well with an HK USP45 and am planning on making a purchase in a little while, however the prevalence of tacticool will make me look like a Call of Duty poser regardless of how great it fits in my hand and throws lead.
2.) Firsthand info, paraphrased from an Alaskan ranger I met on the trail: Your best tool against bears and other dangerous large game is to have a solid plan to remove yourself from the situation. Chances are you won't hit anything that will immediately stop a charging bear.
So you may think your S&W 500 is hot shit but if there are trees in the way and it's closing fast you would be better served knowing WTF to do instead of just saying "fuck it, I'll bring my gun."

I like to carry my 12 gauge with me when heading into deep trails for extended periods of time. We had one kid (never served) who showed up to an outing dressed in ACU. A week of being relentlessly made fun of by the two Marines in our group fixed him of that bad habit.

i know a number of former and active military personal and the slur TED (typical enlisted dumbass) exists for reason. On discussing Syria with a former officer, "I think we need to continue striking key targets, there is local opposition, so I think we just need to tip it in their favor." Discharged TED "We have B-52s, why aren't we just carpet bombing that whole area." Wouldn't that result in massive civilian casualties? "who cares they all hate us"

Man, those Canadians need to learn how to have some fun! lol
There's quite a few places in the US where it makes complete sense to have a gun like this, another commenter brought up the point of down south where those crazy feral wild hogs are. Those things are psycho and 100% will kill you, and you need some stopping power to put 'em down.
I think we agree though, more than a pistol is over the top on a local trail though

How dare you be wrong on the internet!!!
Don't you know better?!
I'm just kidding, you were right he was focused more on the guys "playing soldier" than the weaponry. I stand by the point above though, you don't need the assault rifle to ride down a well traveled local trail.
Good point in your other post about those pigs, those things are psycho.

I don't know why people feel the need to peacock. In my opinion, the whole reason of carrying is protection, advertising it makes your vehicle a target to thieves if they think you have a gun stashed inside.

Cheers to all the real OAF Operators. KCCO.
